The TENTH annual
Tenafly 5k will be
held on Sunday, June 1, 2008. This event is produced by the Tenafly
Educational Foundation (TEF), and 100% of the proceeds are used to support the public schools in Tenafly, New Jersey.
ABOUT THE EVENT:
The event is comprised of five
separate events. The cornerstone of the event is the 5k run. This
5k Run is considered one of the premier runs in New Jersey. It
has been the host of the USATF-NJ Masters
Championship Race and is currently a 500-point Grand Prix
Event; the New Jersey Road Runners Club supports the race,
as well. The race
attracts over 1,000 runners of all levels and uses the ChampionChip computer
scoring system.
However, the true beauty of this race
is that its youngest runner last year was 4 years old and its oldest
runner was 89. Because the run is in support of the Tenafly schools, more than 350 students from Tenafly ran in the race. Special awards are given to grade winners from
Kindergarten through 12th grade.
The second component of the event is
the Rolo Dog Walk. At this unique event, dog owners are
encouraged to walk or run the 5k course with their dogs. There are special water
stations and snack stations along the way specifically set up for
the dogs. This event attracts over 150 dogs with their owners and is growing every year. The event is named for Rolo, the Englewood Hospital and Medical Center pet therapy dog. Click here for a photo of Rolo!
The third component of the event is
the Dog Parade, an agility and obstacle course in which dogs and their owners challenge themselves to do their very best. The parade also includes a friendly competition for trophies in the following canine categories: Loudest Bark, Best Hair and Nails, Best Trick for a Biscuit, Dog and Human Look-Alikes, and the famous Dog and Human Dance Contest.
The fourth component of the event is
the 1-Mile Fun Run. This activity attracts younger children and just-for-fun runners. It draws more than 500 participants and a lively crowd of spectators cheering them on.
The fifth component is the
Family Health and Fitness Fair. This makes our event stand
out from all other races. We have more than 50 exhibitors demonstrate
their products and services to our community. Although this event started out strictly focusing on the health and fitness category, it has since broadened and all types of businesses wanting to reach the lucrative Tenafly/Bergen County market now join us.
ABOUT THE PROCEEDS:
The event raised nearly $30,000 for TEF in 2007 and has raised more than $275,000 since its inception. All money is used to fund educational grants for the Tenafly Public schools. This event is the single most important fundraiser for the Tenafly Educational Foundation.
